Xero has teamed up with rugby league legend Graham Lowe to bring his 12 Dynamic Principles to life.
A highly-respected rugby league coach and administrator, Lowie’s observations and general life lessons (from dropping out of school at 14 years old to surviving a series of strokes, heart attacks and brain aneurysms) have led to the formation of his 12 Dynamic Principles – the key doctrines that guide his life.
Another of Lowie’s Dynamic Principles is about knowing what makes a winning team, and how to surround yourself with one.
Lowie says a winning team is built upon some important and traditional building blocks.
“There’s more to a winning team than what others can see. There’s far more to a winning team than the points on the scoreboard.
“The really important things about a winning organisation are things like respect, about traditions, about loyalty, about friendship, about love. They’re all the things that are absolutely critical, and they’re the hardest things to envelop to become a winning organisation. You have to set the bar very high, as high as you can.”
Lowie’s got a great anecdote about how, when the All Blacks faced France in the Rugby World Cup, they came so close to losing – yet if they had, they still would have remained a winning team because of how the team is built on respect and culture.
“I remember back to when the All Blacks were playing France a number of World Cups ago. They were within a nanosecond of losing that game. As it turns out they won that game, and it was a fantastic win for the All Blacks and New Zealand.
“If they had of lost, far too many in New Zealand would have turned against the All Blacks. Would have turned against them, bagged them, been critical of them, picked them to bits. The reason they would have done that is because they don’t understand what a winning team is. The All Blacks were already a winning team before they step onto the field.
“They’ve got the culture, the respect, the history, the tradition. All those things go towards making a winning team. That’s why no matter what that result had of been, the All Blacks were already a winning team and organisation.”
