Capturing the essence, thoughts, and lessons learnt by successful New Zealand innovators and entrepreneurs, Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) has launched The Innovators exhibition.
This exhibit showcases the entire process of innovation from conceptualisation to creation. Xero is one of the five successful innovations to be featured in the exhibition. We’re alongside others like Rocket Lab founder Peter Beck, Ian Taylor of Animation Research Limited, and Dr Keith Alexander of Springfree Trampoline.
Visitors to the exhibition can see what it takes for every day New Zealanders to achieve extraordinary things. From using New Zealand’s geographical isolation to their advantage, persistence and resilience, the innovators and entrepreneurs on display show that innovation can be accessible to everyone through hard work and creativity.
Xero CEO Rod Drury and key members of the Xero team, Craig Walker and Catherine Walker, detail the early days of building Xero. From starting in a small Wellington apartment ten years ago to becoming a global game-changer with close to a million subscribers.
“New Zealand has always had a culture of innovation,” says Rod. “When you’ve got an idea or you’re building a business on a set of rocks in the South Pacific, you have to think and operate differently to go global.
“A key to global and being innovative is having a diverse group of people behind you. Not just physical diversity or gender diversity, but diversity of thought. If you can have a complimentary team that respect each other and work well together, you can do completely amazing things. You’ll always address problems from different perspectives.”
